Munnar meaning 'three rivers' is so named because of its topography. This hill station is surrounded by tea estates on all sides. Layers of mountain mist, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries make Munnar almost fairytale like beautiful. Munnar is also famous for the wild orchids locally called Neelakurinchi which bloom once in 12 years. During this time the entire valley turns violet making it an absolutely picturesque.

Shopping in Munnar

A small town in Kerala, Munnar is densely populated and has very few shops and stalls. Pick from the fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, spices and tea to carry back home.

Onam is one of the biggest and the most important festivals celebrated in Kerala with grandeur by the people in honour of the homecoming of King Mahabali, Prahlada's grandson. The festival is celebrated over ten days with each day having its own significance. Celebrations include a traditional feast, boat races, Pookalam and Kaikottikali dance.

Vishu is the New Year's Day celebrated in Kerala and falls on the first day of Medam according to the Malayali calendar. It is considered very auspicious to start something new on this day.
